In the early weathering days measurement and control of parameters in weathering instruments was techically limited. For comparable testing, materials of known weathering performance – so called “reference materials” - were developed.
Even today with advanced measurement and control of irradiance, temperature, and relative humidity, there can still be variations from instrument to instrument.
Therefore, many weathering standards still recommend the use of reference materials.
