Accelerated weathering testing is meant to reproduce the aging and failure modes of materials and products in their targeted end use environment. Depending on the test method, the test can be realistic in reproducing the effects of natural weathering. However, accelerated tests are often only used to rank materials to select the best formulation. The more challenging goal would be to predict the actual service life based on accelerated testing. Service life prediction (SLP) methods include modeling of material degradation based on climatic data to design test methods reproducing natural failure modes. Detailed knowledge of product degradation mechanism in the end-use environment is important.
